BIOGRAPHY - MR. WILLIAM SCANLON IV

In the fall of 1988, Billy Scanlon attended Ohio University's College of Fine Arts where he majored in Graphic Design/Illustration, and minored in Art History. Receiving his degree with honors in the Spring of 1992 after only 4 years, he also played on O.U.'s 1988/89 NCCHC National Champion Runner-Up Ice Hockey Team. He received 3 Varsity Letters and concentrated his 4th year to finishing his studies.

Mr. Scanlon then went to work at American Greetings designing point-of-purchase displayers and seasonal graphics along side veteran artists of "Those Characters From Cleveland" (Strawberry Shortcake, Care Bears, Holly Hobby…). Billy helped design and create art for 2 POPAI (Point Of Purchase Advertising International) Award winning product-holding displayers. His store-specific signage designs were repeatedly chosen for K-Mart, Things Remembered, Woolworth's, CVS

He was then called upon to use his computer airbrushing skills to merry photos of un-produced signage and product samples with in-store photographs of past seasons for catalogue. Which led to the honor of being one of the first four American Greetings designers to receive training in the newest 3-dimensional computer modeling and rendering software. This education was then applied to producing computer-aided renderings of displayers that had yet to see production.

During these years Billy continued the one-day-a-weekend bartending, as well as booking, designing posters, and promoting local and national music acts in Cleveland's pubs and clubs. One of his stints included Thursdays at Major Hoopples Riverbend Café where resident band The Schwartz Brothers performed every week. Guitarist Glenn Schwartz is an alumni of The James Gang as well as Pacific Gas & Electric. Bassist Gene Schwartz performs to this day with Robert Jr. Lockwood (2-time, 1998 & 2000, Grammy Nominee who learned the guitar at age eleven from Robert Johnson, the mysterious delta bluesman who was living with his mother). Joe Walsh (The James Gang, The Eagles) performed with the Schwartz Brothers for Billy's farewell shift at Hoopples.

He has designed concert posters for Glass Harp, Bernie Worrell (1997 Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame Inductee of Parliament-Funkadelic), Les Claypool (Primus, Oysterhead), The Derek Trucks Band, Sun Ra Arkestra, Sultans Of Bing, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Yonder Mountain String Band, Ethnic Jazz (featuring 2005 Polka Hall Of Fame Inductee Eddie Siwiec), Kevin McCarthy, birth, David Gans (host of the syndicated "Grateful Dead Hour"), Ray's Music Exchange, Larry Keel Experience...

Billy left American Greetings put more hours into his expanding client list of friends in need of custom visual identities. ScanlonArt's clients include IMG (International Management Group), Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Building Trades, and Manco Duct Tape /Henkel Consumer Adhesives. Mr. Scanlon has de-signed EVERY piece of packaging on EVERY die of Henkel's (Manco's parent company) complete product line, as well as graphics for point-of-purchase signage & displayers. He presently handles all Graphic Design duties for The ITM Group, a worldwide management, marketing, and finance organization.

Billy is the Owner/General Manager/Janitor at Happy Dog, a restaurant/bar/music venue on Cleveland's Near-west side. Through ownership's initiative, the registered voters of Precinct 17N voted the "specific address" wet in November of 2003. Happy Dog now serves beer/wine/liquor, along with the same great dinners and original live music they have been offering since 1998. The Detroit-Shoreway Community Organization recognized Billy and his partner with the 2005 Neighborhood Improvement Award - Commercial.
